Isokorb® at the Top. New York Fulton Street.

Isokorb® has been installed in a $1.4 billion project in lower Manhattan. The project includes a fascinating oculus (oeil de boeuf), measuring at 110 feet (33.5 meters) tall and 53 feet (16 meters) diameter. This eye, protruding from the main building of the New York Fulton Street Transit Station, is designed to provide annual daylight to the atrium civic space below, while also catching the eye of the 275,000 daily passengers of the transit station.

This intriguing dome structure was designed by Grimshaw Architecture, and is defined by a hyperbolic parabolic cable net, stretched within a cone, developed in partnership with James Carpenter. Grimshaw Architects specified Schöck Isokorb® by name for installation at the oculus. They were familiar with Isokorb®, and were looking for structural strength, yet a thermally broken connection to avoid energy loss and condensation. The installation team has been pleased with the service of Schöck, and described the process as straight-forward.

The manufactured structural thermal break element for steel connections, the Schöck Isokorb®, is fixed to the main structure, and provides support to an outside service walkway for the oculus. This project is the beginning of many installations of Isokorb® in the North America market.
